On our winter tour in spring 2010 we resolved to pay Spitzbergen another visit, so in July 2011 we returned in Spitzbergen’s short summer and were welcomed by a strong wind on the camp site of Longyearbyen.

The transport of our luggage and material went smoothly and so we used the first day to organize ferry tickets, and equip ourselves with fuel for the stove and items for a polar bear fence.

The subsequent day everything was stuffed into the backpacks, things that did not fit in anymore were fixed on the outside. With 32kg, the bags were at the limit of what we could carry without major problems. Our strategy was to hike for an hour, then to make a long recovering break to hike for another hour. It worked very well, although the sections got longer and longer at the end of the trip as provision in the backpacks got less and less. Back home we practised by strolling the parks of Stuttgart with 30kg on our backs for one hour- which irritated several passerbys,  some were curious and most of those were right in concluding that we trained for a trip.
